About the Azeroth Weather Service

Chief Meteorologist Stormsong

Our Mission

The Azeroth Weather Service (AWS) is the official meteorological authority for the world of Azeroth and its connected realms. Established in Year 24 of the Third War by a joint charter of the Kirin Tor and the Explorers' League, our mission is to provide accurate, timely, and occasionally survivable weather information to the citizens of Azeroth, regardless of faction affiliation.

We monitor weather conditions across four continents, fourteen major zones, and an ever-increasing number of pocket dimensions, alternate timelines, and afterlife realms that Azerothian adventurers insist on visiting.

"Our forecast accuracy rate of approximately 12% may seem low, but consider that we are forecasting weather on a planet where dragons can rearrange the climate, void entities corrupt the atmosphere, and an entire continent was shattered by a dragon bursting through the ocean floor. We're doing our best."

Chief Meteorologist Thaddeus Stormsong, addressing the Stormwind Senate, Year 31

Our History

Year 24 — Founding

Founded in the aftermath of the Third War, when it became clear that the existing weather prediction methods (asking a shaman to sniff the wind) were insufficient for a world facing increasingly apocalyptic weather events. The Kirin Tor provided arcane sensing equipment; the Explorers' League provided dwarves willing to stand on mountaintops holding instruments.

Year 26 — The Burning Crusade Expansion

AWS expanded operations to Outland, a shattered planet floating in the Twisting Nether. Our meteorologists reported that weather on Outland "doesn't really work the way weather should work" and requested hazard pay. They did not receive it. The Zangarmarsh office has been requesting dehumidifiers since day one.

Radar Technician Fizzlesprocket

Year 27 — Wrath of the Lich King

Northrend operations began. Our Icecrown correspondent lasted four hours before requesting transfer. We have gone through 347 Icecrown correspondents since then. The position is always open. Our attempts to measure wind chill at the Frozen Throne were abandoned when the thermometer achieved sentience and begged to be taken somewhere warm.

Year 28 — The Cataclysm

Deathwing's emergence fundamentally altered weather patterns across Azeroth. Thousand Needles flooded permanently. Our entire canyon weather station was submerged. The Thousand Needles regional office now operates from the Speedbarge, which we are told is "totally safe" by the goblins who own it. Our forecast models had to be completely rebuilt. They are now slightly less wrong than before.

Year 30 — Mists of Pandaria

Discovery of Pandaria added an entire continent of weather systems we had never encountered, including "sha-corrupted precipitation" and "mantid swarm fronts." Our Pandaria team reported the weather as "beautiful but haunted" which is technically accurate for most of Azeroth.

Year 32 — The Burning of Teldrassil

The single worst weather event in AWS history. Our Darkshore office reported "fire" followed by "more fire" followed by silence. The entire Darkshore forecast model was replaced with a single entry that reads "fire." We have not had reason to update it since. Our condolences to the night elf community. Our Darkshore correspondent position is also always open (must be fireproof).

Our Team

Field Reporter Grok'thar

Chief Meteorologist Thaddeus Stormsong — Kul Tiran human. 30 years experience. Has personally survived 14 hurricanes, 3 volcanic eruptions, 1 Cataclysm, and an encounter with C'Thun that he refuses to discuss. His "feels like" temperature calculations incorporating Old God proximity were initially mocked but have since been validated by the Kirin Tor.

Radar Technician Trixie Fizzlesprocket — Gnome. Operates the Gnomeregan Remote Sensing Array, our primary radar system. The radar works approximately 60% of the time. The other 40%, it picks up transmissions from alternate timelines, which Fizzlesprocket insists are "also useful data."

Field Reporter Grok'thar — Orc. Based in Durotar. Has reported the weather as "hot" every single day for six years. His reports are always accurate. He has requested transfer to Nagrand 847 times. Request pending.

Marine Forecaster Tidehunter

Marine Forecaster Elara Tidehunter — Night elf. Specializes in oceanic and coastal weather. Was formerly stationed in Darkshore before the incident. Now operates from Booty Bay, where she monitors tropical storms and "pirate-related weather disturbances." She is not okay but she is professional.

Undead Weather Specialist Mortuus — Forsaken. Tirisfal Glades correspondent. Unique qualification: cannot be killed by plague winds. Reports the weather with clinical detachment. His forecast style has been described as "accurate but deeply unsettling."

Technology

Our weather monitoring infrastructure includes:

  • Gnomeregan Remote Sensing Array — Arcane-powered radar system. Detects precipitation, magical energy fronts, and Old God corruption vectors. Operational status: "mostly."
  • Kirin Tor Scrying Network — 47 scrying stations across Azeroth. Each station is maintained by a mage who has been told this is "important work" and "not a punishment posting."
  • Earthen Ring Seismic Sensors — Shaman-operated tectonic monitoring. Particularly critical since the Cataclysm, when "is the ground going to explode" became a valid weather question.
  • Explorer's League Mountaintop Stations — Dwarven weather stations on every major peak. Staffed by dwarves who describe the work as "cold, lonely, and there's not enough ale."
  • Arcane Barometric Pressure Units (APU) — Our proprietary pressure measurement system, which accounts for both atmospheric pressure and ambient magical field strength.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why is your forecast accuracy only 12%?

A: Because Azeroth's weather is influenced by dragon aspects, titan facilities, Old God corruption, interdimensional rifts, demonic invasions, and the occasional warchief deciding to burn down a world tree. We challenge you to do better.

Q: Why does the "Feels Like" temperature account for Old God proximity?

A: Peer-reviewed research published in the Dalaran Journal of Atmospheric Sciences (Year 29) confirmed that proximity to Old God entities produces measurable temperature anomalies, typically manifesting as an inexplicable chill, existential dread, and a vague sense that reality is thinner than it should be. These factors meaningfully impact perceived temperature.

Q: Will Darkshore ever stop being on fire?

A: Our models suggest no. We have been wrong before (88% of the time), so there is hope.

Q: Is Nagrand actually that perfect or is the weather station broken?

A: We have replaced the Nagrand weather station four times. Every station reports the same thing: 23°C, gentle breeze, perfect visibility. We have no explanation. Our leading theory is that the Titans specifically designed Nagrand to make everywhere else look bad.

Q: How do I apply for a position?

A: We are always hiring for Icecrown, Darkshore, and Tirisfal. No experience necessary. Life insurance not provided. Resurrection services negotiable (Horde employees only, per HR policy). Send inquiries to the Kirin Tor Meteorological Bureau, Dalaran (whichever version of Dalaran is currently floating in the sky — check before mailing).
